It’s easy to see why the eastern suburbs are so favorable in Melbourne; the roads widen and you’re flushed with luscious, leafy emerald canopies and Edwardian Gothic style brick dwellings and heritage homes. An affluent neighbourhood, a mere 6kms from Melbourne’s CBD, Hawthorn boasts a unique blend of heritage prestige and new age charm.
Education seems to be the theme here and Hawthorn’s location is set on a private school belt, providing good geographical access to many educational institutions. Home to Scotch College, one of the oldest and most prestigious private schools in the country and Swinburne University of Technology, which offers TAFE and undergraduate courses. Melbourne University also has a campus here with an IELTS centre and Monash Caulfield campus is a short 15-minute drive on Burke Road.
Well connected through public transportation, you can hop on a train at Flinders Street Station and arrive at Glenferrie Station; in less time it takes your iPod to shuffle through three songs (that is 10 minutes, people). Alight at the Glenferrie Station and you find yourself at the heart of Hawthorn, also famous for being its main shopping district, Glenferrie Road. Major supermarkets, fashion boutiques and chain stores are interspersed in between a plethora of cafes and restaurants on Glenferrie Road and residents here are spoilt for choice. Yummy mummies in designer workout outfits stroll this strip with their adorable tater tot babies while students shuffle about quickly to and from classes.
Escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the quiet lull of Auburn Village instead with its clothing boutiques, bakeries and independent home ware stores. End the day with a hop over to Fairview Park – a favourite among residents and visitors alike for its location just on the Yarra River Banks with jogging and bike paths along the river. With BBQ facilities as well as a sporting ground, it is hours of sunny, healthy, Vitamin D filled entertainment for everyone – no technology required. Hawthorn is a well-off suburb and damn rightfully so as well, its come a long way from the Gold Rush but do not be intimidated, you’ll find out soon enough that you do not need the moolah to enjoy it.
